I have just finished watching Swades. It is a great piece of inspirational work, that inspires all Indians to work for the betterment of the millions of compatriot who are born with the curse of poverty and 'darkness'.
If box office reports be believed, Swades is a flop and a great disappointment to the expectations from Ashutosh G- after Lagaan. The response is natural, and I am critical about it. The film society isn't developed enough in India to appreciate an inspirational movie like Swades. Most of the people who go to cinema halls are EITHER rickshaw pullers - interested more in cheap Govinda comedy than a movie that shows how to redress their state- OR teenagers who applaud to meaningless song sequences and skin show.
Swades, the movie, caters to two critical topics- HOPE and MOTIVATION. And my tribute to the director for framing such a good story line (he happens to be the writer too) with no non-sense dialogues and a positive message to society.
Many trivial-looking, yet sensitive topics have been dealt with great skills. In an altercation with the village panchayat, Shah Rukh Khan states that we keep saying we have 'sanskar and parampara' that the westerners don't have but thats a lame excuse. They have more sophisticated philosophhies of their own. It is just that Americans are Individualistic and we have family bearing.
Lastly, I would quote Rajyavarman Singh Rathode the feeling that looms over the complete movie:
My answer to those who ask why we don't win more medals is- go out and play.
